Star Trek, an American TV show, presents human beings journeying amongst the stars on star ships. The show delves into many aspects of the human condition; from physical exploration, to philosophical conundrums, metaphysical fantasies, interstellar politics, cultural issues and so much more. The protagonists in this show work for a quasi-military organization called Starfleet which is the space force of the political entity known as The Federation centered on Earth. Now Starfleet has a charter based on which it operates. The first directive of this charter, known as the Prime Directive, has relevance for our real world.

The Prime Directive, also known as Starfleet General Order 1, is a fundamental principle in the Star Trek universe. It prohibits Starfleet personnel from interfering with the natural development of alien civilizations. The main goal is to protect less advanced societies from the potential dangers of advanced technology and knowledge.

Key Points
  • Starfleet crews must not identify themselves or their mission to civilizations that have not achieved a certain level of technological development.
  • No interference with the social, cultural, or technological growth of these societies is allowed.

How would this apply to our real world of today? Well, we would need to modify and reinterpret the above points:

  • Nations must not seek to impose their values or systems of governance on other nations.
  • No interference with the social, cultural, or technological growth of other nations is allowed.
  • No seeking to universalize the tenets of one nation or group of nations onto another nation or group of nations.

A lot of the problems of the real world today stem from not following the above principles: from colonialism to neocolonialism to proliferation of weapons and dangerous technologies to cultural erasure, cultural appropriation etc.

Colonialism violated the first two points above. Europe sought to impose and exploit other parts of the world without regard to the long-term consequences of such violative behavior. Neocolonialism seeks to violate the third point above. The superpower of today tries to turn every nation into its own image much as a certain Abrahamic religion teaches its adherents about God making Man in his own image.

The world has come to be organized as nation states. Nationalism gained ground in the 19th century in Europe. Nationalism is only now gaining steam in the so-called developing world. The sovereignty of the more powerful developing countries is being tested as the Euro-American powers struggle to maintain their hegemony. It is at this time that an application of the Prime Directive for the Real World becomes most relevant. Nations ought to deal with each other on principles that don’t violate the Prime Directive. Creating international institutions that are controlled by only one group of nations or one type of civilization and having those institutions set rules for everyone else is clearly not working and is violative of the aforementioned Prime Directive. Nations have different political systems, different cultures, different understandings of life and the world. To have a singular set of tenets to describe all of them does the world a disservice.
